Sunday Morning Preview - May 5, 2019

The Sermon on the Mount begins with Jesus giving a list of characteristics possessed by those whom God considers to be “blessed”. I say that God is the One who considers these to be blessed because most people wouldn’t.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit.”
“Blessed are those who mourn.”
“Blessed are the meek.”

To most of us the opposite is true, it’s the rich, the joyful, and the powerful that are rightly considered blessed. Jesus is describing a group of people to avoid. “You’ll never reach your full potential if you get too tangled up with those poor whiney mourners!”

I hope everyone will be able to join me this Sunday for, “Blessed Are They Who Mourn”.

Sunday Morning Preview - March 31, 2019

A few more highlights from the sermon on the mount:

Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward

And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites…they have received their reward

And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.”

Clearly, Jesus is teaching that heavenly rewards are for those who do the right things - in the right way!
Would that be an accurate assessment of the message of the New Testament?
Should there be a new Christian catchphrase? #justdoitright

Please join me this Sunday at DCC for “Sermon on the Mount IV”.

Sunday Morning Preview - March 24, 2019

”Those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.”

The desire to be more like Jesus is something that all Christians experience but few ever feel like they are achieving. By this time shouldn’t I at least be getting close? Is it possible that I am not trying hard enough? Is God as frustrated with my failures as I am? What if my next train-wreck is the last straw for Him?

Unless we remember that justification precedes sanctification and that both are the work of God in and for us - the Sermon on the Mount can leave true believers feeling hopelessly discouraged.

I hope you will all join me for more on this in The Sermon on the Mount - Part III

Sunday Morning Preview - March 17, 2019

Count the cost before starting construction, build the nest before laying the eggs, poll the voters before announcing the candidacy. So many of life’s disastrous circumstances can be avoided by simply doing things in the correct order. This is no less true where theological matters are concerned. Law and gospel, justification and sanctification, deeds and grace, repentance and faith; all of these important doctrinal concepts must be understood in their proper order if shipwreck is to be avoided.

I hope you will all join me for more on this in The Sermon on the Mount - Part II

Sunday Morning Preview - February 24, 2019

I hope you will all be able to join me this Sunday for the conclusion of our study of Matthew 4:17-25 entitled “Follow Me”.

What did Jesus mean when He told the disciples that He would make them “fishers of men”?
How far are we to go in our designing of lures?
Isn’t it deceptive of us to cast such appealing bait when we know the hook it conceals?

Am I doing something dishonest if I encourage you to invite a friend to stay for Pizza and Games after Service this Sunday? Here fishy, fishy, fishy.

Sunday Morning Preview - January 27, 2019

Please join us this Sunday morning for our annual business meeting chaired by Board Treasurer Brad Lutz. We will review the financial report for 2018 and discuss the proposed 2019 budget, followed by questions and answers.  The business meeting is usually fairly short, leaving us with plenty of time to continue our sermon series in the Gospel of Matthew:

Immediately after His identification with us in baptism, Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be exposed to Satan's temptations.  Where Adam failed, Jesus must now succeed!

In a message entitled 40 Days & Nights, we will examine the reality of the spiritual realm, the war that rages within it, and the peril faced by those who ignore it.
