Sunday December 22, 2013 at DCC

The waiting is nearly over.

This Sunday is the last one before the big event. The great celebration of the King’s birth is at hand. The One who is our hope fulfilled, the One whose punishment buys our peace, the King whose joy is our strength; we mark His coming… soon.

We’ve been trying to put ourselves in the shoes of those who looked forward to His arrival, trying to feel their desperation, trying to remember how it was, how it was before love came down. Before the King was born.

As it turns out there are few similarities between the King born in the manger and the one most people awaited, I hope you will all join me this Sunday morning for “Love Came Down

Sunday Morning Preview - December 1, 2013

In Luke we see the response of Simeon to the child Jesus.
Why did he react to the birth of Christ this way?
What was the significance of Jesus's arrival on earth?
Join us Sunday as we look at the answers to these questions, and whether or not that significance holds true today.

And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,
“Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your salvation
that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your people Israel.” (Luke 2:27-32)

Sunday Morning Preview - November 24, 2013

Can it really be the last Sunday in November, and only a month until Christmas Eve already?

As impossible as it seems, we are indeed on the verge of another advent season with a new year following quickly on it’s heals. With these things in mind I want to take the sermon time this Sunday to focus on why the birth of Christ is so important to the Church and why we continue to faithfully and repetitiously celebrate these holidays year after year.

Why did Jesus have to come? Why can’t we have relationship with God without His coming?
Why can’t we satisfy God’s righteous requirements in the law on our own?

I hope you will all join me this Sunday morning for a sermon taken from Psalm 15 which I have entitled; “Who Shall Dwell on Your Holy Hill?”

Fall Back Saturday Night - DST Ends

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. (Ephesians 4:31)

This Sunday morning the plan is to wrap up our look at the sinful trap that is bitterness. Part One is available on-line here:

Bitterness is one of those things that fallen humans can convince themselves that they are entitled to indulge. “If what happened to me had happened to you, you’d be just as bitter as I am.”
Is there any case in which this kind of an attitude is permissible for a believer in Christ?

What if the bitter person is someone you love? How do we minister to them; should we even try?

I hope to see you at 10:30!

Sunday Morning Preview - October 27, 2013

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. (Ephesians 4:31)

How does reading an instruction like that effect you? I suspect it is a tall order for some folks and maybe not too difficult a list for others. We are all bent toward sin, just not the same sin.

What about you?
Do tend toward bitterness? Are you preoccupied with how hard and unfair life can be, do you see the blessing of others and feel envious or sad or maybe even angry?
If I am a bitter person; how do I stop being that way - can I stop?
If I love someone caught in this sin, how do I minister to them?

This Sunday, as we continue on in the book of Ephesians, the plan is to spend some time looking at these questions surrounding the topic of bitterness. I hope to see you at 10:30!

Sunday Morning Preview - October 20, 2013

As a result of circumstances at the mission; Joel will not be bringing the Word at DCC this Sunday morning as previously announced. Please keep him in prayer though as he preaches at Floodgates Church and encourages them to continue in the important and ongoing ministry of Lighthouse Mission.

At Dakota I will be finishing up the message from two weeks ago, which can be reviewed here:   http://decormie2551.sermon.tv/9429320

What is positive confession theology and can it be supported biblically?
Are Christians supposed to change their life circumstances, or create a better future for themselves by speaking, proclaiming, or declaring “faith filled words” over themselves?
Is this how God created the universe? Does God use faith confessions to accomplish His purposes?
I hope to see you at Church this Sunday at 10:30!

Sunday Morning Preview - October 6, 2013

After the long summer “community building” break I am excited to be taking up where left off on our trek through the Book of Ephesians.

You will recall that Paul is teaching what life is to look like for the christian in light of the gospel. He gives six behaviors to discontinue - because they destroy unity and six replacement behaviors which will foster and protect unity.
To date we have covered: Instead of lying; speak truth, instead of outbursts of wrath; righteous anger, and instead of stealing; working and contributing to the church body.

This week, in an exposition of Ephesians 4:29-30, we will address the topic of proper conversation amoung saints.
  • What exactly is meant by the phrase “corrupting talk”?
  • Is Paul saying that Christians should never speak words of rebuke or correction?
  • Are we to avoid any talk that might result in someone’s feelings getting hurt or someone being offended?
  • What is “positive confession” theology and what if anything is wrong with it?

I hope to see you at Church this Sunday at 10:30!

Sunday Morning Preview - September 29, 2013

This Sunday at Dakota Community Church (and this week I mean it!) the plan is to complete our Summer 2013 series, “Building Community” (based on a portion of “Gospel in Life” by Tim Keller). The eleventh and final sermon is entitled - “Serving One Another’s Interests Rather Than Our Own - Part Two”

Part One may be heard here: http://decormie2551.sermon.tv/9350813

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. - Philippians 2:3-4

Eliminating selfish ambition and conceit as motivating factors is certainly no easy task; and I can’t help but wonder if it is even possible to truly consider others more significant than ourselves?

I hope you will join me this Sunday as we wrap up our Summer/Fall 2013 series!

Sunday Morning September 22, 2013 at Dakota

This Sunday at Dakota Community Church the plan is to complete our Summer 2013 series, “Building Community” (based on a portion of “Gospel in Life” by Tim Keller) with the tenth and final sermon, entitled - “Serving One Another’s Interests Rather Than Our Own.”

How bent in on ourselves do we have to be that we approach even community with purely selfish motives - and yet somehow that is the condition in which we often find ourselves. We agree that Jesus was humble and that we should be as well; but then we swell up with pride in defense of our selfish motives and actions.
Have you ever been guilty of saying, or at least of thinking, any of the following:
“Well turn the other cheek doesn’t mean we should just TURN THE OTHER CHEEK!”
“You can’t expect me to prefer my brother every time - I”ll never get anything done my way.”
“What about everyone else preferring me - for a change?”

I hope you will join me this Sunday as we deal with these issues and wrap up our Summer 2013 series!

This Sunday at DCC - Welcome Pastor Paul Winter

I hope many of you will join me this Sunday morning at Dakota Community Church for what is sure to be a very special service in the life of our community.

Believe me - “Back to Church Sunday” is always an important date on the calendar in Winnipeg. Summer vacation is over for another year, the kids are back to school, and life begins to take on a more consistent routine. Please remember that church attendance is an important part of that routine for members of the Body of Christ.

Besides the usual joy of this season, this year we have the added pleasure of welcoming Pastor Paul Winter to the DCC pulpit for the first time!

I look forward to seeing you this Sunday!

Sunday Morning Preview - September 8, 2013

This Sunday at Dakota Community Church the plan is to continue our Summer 2013 series, “Building Community” (based on a portion of “Gospel in Life” by Tim Keller) with the ninth of ten sermons, entitled - “Serving One Another Through Forgiveness & Reconciliation.”

Forgiveness and Reconciliation. The fact that they exist as categories in need of addressing in a series on building community is a reminder to us that when sinful humans congregate, bad things sometimes happen. Sooner or later you and I are either going to get hurt, or we are going to be the cause of someone else’s hurt. The temptation in the face of this dangerous reality is to act like modern day playground designers and simply eliminate any possibility of pain.
That, however, would require the complete breaking of fellowship, something that the Bible is pretty clear about us NOT doing.

I hope you will read this week’s key scripture verses in advance and come to service ready to rejoice in the Lord and to receive His word thankfully.

Sunday Morning September 1, 2013 at Dakota

This Sunday at Dakota Community Church the plan is to continue our Summer 2013 series, “Building Community” (based on a portion of “Gospel in Life” by Tim Keller) with the eighth of now ten sermons, this one entitled - “Serving One Another Through Accountability - Part 2.”

I hope to tackle the second of my two major ideas from last week when we looked at the whole concept of Christian service. Please listen here - (http://decormie2551.sermon.tv/9095254) if you missed that important message.

This Sunday I plan to examine the idea of accountability within the context of the local church.
What is meant by being accountable to one another? How is being accountable to one another an act of christian service? And is Christ like growth even possible without accountability to one another?

I hope to see you Sunday morning,

This Sunday - August 25, 2013 - At Dakota Community Church

This Sunday at Dakota Community Church the plan is to continue our Summer 2013 series, “Building Community” (based on a portion of “Gospel in Life” by Tim Keller) with the seventh of nine sermons, this one entitled - “Serving One Another Through Accountability.”

I hope to tackle two major ideas this Sunday.
First, I want to look at the whole concept of Christian service. Many today would say that we are not to be servant minded at all, that that is the entirely wrong approach to take as we are sons and daughters of the King of Kings and should behave accordingly. I’ll be challenging that thinking!

Secondly, I want to examine the idea of accountability within the context of the local church.
What is meant by being accountable to one another? How is being accountable to one another an act of christian service? And is Christ like growth even possible without accountability to one another?

I hope to see you Sunday morning!

Sunday Morning Preview - August 18, 2013

This Sunday at Dakota Community Church the plan is to continue our Summer 2013 series, “Building Community” (based on a portion of “Gospel in Life” by Tim Keller) with the sixth of nine sermons, this one entitled - “Sharing One Another’s Beliefs, Thinking & Spirituality.”

Sharing beliefs, thinking, and spirituality. How is that going to look?

Prosperity, healing, and prophetic words. Angels, demons, authority, secrets, keys, secret keys, and proclamations. Prayers of faith, prayers of petition, unceasing prayers, vain repetitious prayers, and soaking prayers. Pre-tribulation rapture, mid-tribulation rapture, post-tribulation rapture, no tribulation rapture, and no rapture, rapture. NIV, ESV, NASB, NKJV, or Paul’s favorite, the KJV! Beliefs about music styles, beliefs about beverage choices, beliefs about clothing options, beliefs about entertainment acceptability.

Have any strong feelings about any of these? Come Sunday prepared to share! JUST KIDDING!

How then do we share beliefs, thinking, and spirituality in such a way that community is built?

I hope to see you all this Sunday morning.

Sign of Promise

The bow shall be seen in the cloud.

The rainbow, the symbol of the covenant with Noah, is typical of our Lord Jesus, who is the Lord's witness to the people. When may we expect to see the token of the covenant? The rainbow is only to be seen painted upon a cloud. When the sinner's conscience is dark with clouds, when he remembers his past sin, and mourneth and lamenteth before God, Jesus Christ is revealed to him as the covenant Rainbow, displaying all the glorious hues of the divine character and betokening peace. To the believer, when his trials and temptations surround him, it is sweet to behold the person of our Lord Jesus Christ-to see him bleeding, living, rising, and pleading for us. God's rainbow is hung over the cloud of our sins, our sorrows, and our woes, to prophesy deliverance. Nor does a cloud alone give a rainbow, there must be the crystal drops to reflect the light of the sun. So, our sorrows must not only threaten, but they must really fall upon us. There had been no Christ for us if the vengeance of God had been merely a threatening cloud: punishment must fall in terrible drops upon the Surety. Until there is a real anguish in the sinner's conscience, there is no Christ for him; until the chastisement which he feels becomes grievous, he cannot see Jesus. But there must also be a sun; for clouds and drops of rain make not rainbows unless the sun shineth. Beloved, our God, who is as the sun to us, always shines, but we do not always see him-clouds hide his face; but no matter what drops may be falling, or what clouds may be threatening, if he does but shine there will be a rainbow at once. It is said that when we see the rainbow the shower is over. Certain it is, that when Christ comes, our troubles remove; when we behold Jesus, our sins vanish, and our doubts and fears subside. When Jesus walks the waters of the sea, how profound the calm!

Sunday Morning Preview - August 11, 2013

This Sunday at Dakota Community Church the plan is to continue our Summer 2013 series, “Building Community” (based on a portion of “Gospel in Life” by Tim Keller) with the fifth of nine sermons, this one entitled - “Sharing One Another’s Needs & Problems.”

Should believers open up and share their personal needs and problems with one another, or is this kind of “negative talk” somehow dangerous and useful to the enemy in his battle to defeat us?

How we answer this question says something very fundamental about our view of what exactly it means to be a Christian and a church member.

If the goal of the Christian life is to find ultimate success and fulfillment, then we are going to look at this very differently than if our goal is to humbly lay down our lives in service to God and fellow redeemed in Christ.

I hope to see Sunday morning
