Welcome & Good Morning!

Welcome to Dakota Community Church
Grace, Freedom, Laughter

Good morning!
Our aim today is to Glorify God by making much of Jesus and all that He has done for us!

Today’s sermon is a continuation of our journey through the Book of Ephesians. For three Chapters Paul has been unpacking God’s amazing plan of redemption - NOW he turns to instruction about how that is to look in the life of the redeemed!

Sunday Morning Preview - July 22, 2012

This Sunday morning marks the half way point in our journey through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. I hope you are enjoying this process as much as I am!
For three chapters now Paul has been unpacking God’s awesome eternal plan for humanity. A plan involving new life rising from spiritual death, reborn men and women forming a new community - the Church - being reconciled in Christ to God, and reunited with each other - brothers and sisters from every tribe and race - equal and accepted.
Having looked at these “new men”, and this “new society”; Paul now turns his attention to the “new standards” that will define this new order. I hope you will join me this Sunday for; “Grace at Work” as we begin to define what the grace life looks like when the rubber meets the road!

This Sunday at Dakota

I trust everyone is enjoying this beautiful summer weather we are having and... I sincerely hope you will be able to join me at DCC on Sunday when the plan is to wrap up our examination of Ephesians 3:14-21.
If you missed the first two sermons on this passage - Paul’s Powerful Prayer 1&2 - they are available on iTunes (Subscribe to the Podcast - just go to the iTunes store and search Dakota Community Church) or on the church website by clicking here.
Paul closes his prayer with a wonderful doxology in which he makes clear that the church glorifies God by providing the stage upon which the work of Jesus Christ can take effect. Again the point being that this drama is not starring you or I - It is about Jesus.

See you Sunday!

Charles Spurgeon - "Pray for Us"

Morning

Brethren, pray for us.

1 Thessalonians 5:25

This one morning in the year we reserved to refresh the reader's memory upon the subject of prayer for ministers, and we do most earnestly implore every Christian household to grant the fervent request of the text first uttered by an apostle and now repeated by us. Brethren, our work is solemnly momentous, involving weal or woe to thousands; we treat with souls for God on eternal business, and our word is either a savour of life unto life, or of death unto death. A very heavy responsibility rests upon us, and it will be no small mercy if at the last we be found clear of the blood of all men. As officers in Christ's army, we are the especial mark of the enmity of men and devils; they watch for our halting, and labour to take us by the heels. Our sacred calling involves us in temptations from which you are exempt, above all it too often draws us away from our personal enjoyment of truth into a ministerial and official consideration of it. We meet with many knotty cases, and our wits are at a non plus; we observe very sad backslidings, and our hearts are wounded; we see millions perishing, and our spirits sink. We wish to profit you by our preaching; we desire to be blest to your children; we long to be useful both to saints and sinners; therefore, dear friends, intercede for us with our God. Miserable men are we if we miss the aid of your prayers, but happy are we if we live in your supplications. You do not look to us but to our Master for spiritual blessings, and yet how many times has He given those blessings through His ministers; ask then, again and again, that we may be the earthen vessels into which the Lord may put the treasure of the gospel. We, the whole company of missionaries, ministers, city missionaries, and students, do in the name of Jesus beseech you

The Good Old Days

Do not say, "Why were the old days better than these?" For it is not wise to ask such questions.Ecclesiastes 7:10

When people are ungrateful to us, we often start complaining, "Things are worse now than they ever were." But we shouldn't talk like this. Elderly people tend to say, "When I was a child, everything was better." They are the "people who praise the days gone by," as one poet calls them. But the author of Ecclesiastes says this isn't true. Things never really went that well. We only realize how bad things are now because as we grow older, the number of things that annoy us also increases.

Children don't pay much attention to news about someone deceiving or murdering someone else. They keep on playing, running, and riding. They think it's the worst thing in the world when someone steals another's marbles. Only then do they become angry. But when they become adults, they become sensitive to the troubles and disloyalty of people around them. They get angry when a horse breaks a leg, when the cattle don't fatten properly, and so on.

The world has always been filled with troubles, but we haven't always been aware of them all. When we were children, nothing bothered us. Our lives remained relatively calm. But the world has always been wicked. Therefore, make sure that you have a quiet and peaceful heart. Don't become upset when you see these evils. Though you can't change the world, make sure you are changed into a new person.

Sunday Morning Preview - June 24, 2012

This week we will get back down to work on the wonderful Letter of Paul to the Church at Ephesus.

If it were possible for us to hear your prayers, or to read the secret entries in your journal, (if you have one); we would discover a great deal about what matters to you.
We would understand your deepest desires and know your darkest fears because these are the things that a person prays about. We do not waste time in prayer concerning things of no consequence to us.

In this week's sermon, entitled; “Paul’s Powerful Prayer”, we will examine what “mattered” to the Apostle Paul, what he desired in prayer that is, for the precious flock of God in Ephesus.

Please preview the text using the link provided and then hopefully I’ll see you this Sunday!

Faith Alone by Martin Luther

Carry Each Other's Burdens
Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.Galatians 6:2

Everywhere love turns, it finds burdens to carry and ways to help. Love is the law of Christ. To love means to wish another person good from the heart. It means to seek what is best for the other person.

What if there were no one who made a mistake? What if no one fell? What if no one needed help? To whom would you show love? To whom could you show favor? Whose best could you seek? Love would not be able to exist if there were no people who made mistakes and sinned. The philosophers say that each of these people is the appropriate and adequate "object" of love or the "material" with which love has to work.

The sinful nature—or the kind of love that is really lust— wants others to wish it well and to give it what it desires. In other words, it seeks its own interests. The "material" it works with is a righteous, holy, godly, and good person. People who follow this sinful nature completely reverse God's teaching. They want others to bear their burdens, serve them, and carry them. These are the kind of people who despise having uneducated, useless, angry, foolish, troublesome, and gloomy people as their life companions. Instead, they look for friendly, charming, good-natured, quiet, and holy people. They want to live, not on earth, but in paradise; not among sinners, but among angels; not in the world, but in heaven. We should feel sorry for these people, because they are receiving their reward here on earth and possessing their heaven in this life.

Sunday Morning Preview - June 10/12

Please join me at Dakota this Sunday morning for the usual great time of corporate worship which, this week, will include partaking of communion together.
My sermon is entitled “Where Our Church is Going” and is designed to clarify in all of our minds the specific ways that we believe the Lord is leading us as a community at this time. A few of the points I plan to cover include:
    • When we gather: The purpose of the Sunday meeting
    • After the equipping: Our Jerusalem, the highways and byways of Winnipeg
    • Putting the “world” in our worldview: Taking the gospel and experiencing life outside the North American bubble.
I hope to see you Sunday!

April 29, 2012 at Dakota Community Church

I hope you will join me this Sunday morning as we turn our attention back to the book of Ephesians, where we will likely be for the next few months if all goes as planned.

Paul has just finished laying out (In Chapter 2) the former alienation felt by the Gentile nations in their separation from God and from the chosen nation of Israel. He has made clear that in Christ this separation has ended and now, just as he prepares to pray for the Ephesian believers he pauses to reveal his unique authority and calling to do so.

This Sunday morning we will examine Paul’s heart as he reveals it to us and to the Church at Ephesus in this brief passage.

What exactly has God made known to Paul? How has this revelation affected his life? What unique calling has he received and what does this message mean for the Church in Ephesus and for the Church of Christ throughout time?

Palm Sunday at Dakota

A day of joy and victory, the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, voices shout “Hosanna” and “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
Palm Sunday is a day that celebrates great insight - the King had arrived after all and the disciples rightly rejoiced in this knowledge - but this was also a day of great misunderstanding. Only Jesus himself would have had any idea of the events that were about to unfold; of just how this King would be crowned and how He would ultimately rise to take His throne.
I hope you will join me this Sunday morning as we consider a few of the contrasts that are presented to us in Luke’s account of the day we have come to celebrate as Palm Sunday.
On the one hand; amazing insight, worshipful acceptance, and tearful mercy.
On the other; great misunderstanding, murderous rejection, and absolute authority!

Our Condition

But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins."

Faith in Christ or death in our sins.

The "Required" Work

"Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God has placed his seal of approval."
Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"
Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." - John 6:27-29

The Freedom I Need

I do not need easing of circumstance, relief from difficulty, and distance from pain and suffering in order to be free. The freedom Jesus has secured for me is freedom from bitterness, anger, fear, resentment, self-pity, offense, and hopelessness in the crucible of present pain and suffering; it is freedom from my burdensome sense of "I deserve better," the encumbrance of entitlement. Only the gospel can free us from the enslaving pressure to defend ourselves. That is real freedom - God sized freedom! (Tullian Tchividjian -slight paraphrase)

This Sunday at DCC (Mar. 11, 2012)

This Sunday morning we will share communion before continuing our journey through the Old Testament Book of Judges. You may wish to review the Series opening sermon here and/or week 2 here.

The passage we are looking at this week (Judges 3:1-11) reveals that God does not defeat some of Israel’s enemies in the Promised Land in order to teach and test His people.

Does that rub anyone else the wrong way taken at face value? Keep in mind the terrible acts of war that occurred as a result of these “lessons and tests”; how is God just if this is true? For that matter - how is God good, and right, and holy, and perfect, and our loving heavenly Father; if He allows lessons and tests such as these?

One common response to these types of difficult biblical passages is to say that the author’s humanity entered into the picture as he wrote - in other words, it seemed to the author that God “did” or “allowed” this - but he was mistakenly writing from a fallen human perspective that is ultimately incorrect. We’ll see why that response is way off base and we’ll look at how to reconcile our theology to tough passages like this, rather than trying to bend the scripture to fit our understanding!

The plan now is to finish up the life of the first judge: Othniel and hopefully to get a good portion of the life of the left-handed (2nd) judge - Ehud - completed as well! Hope to see you 1 hour earlier (but still) Sunday at 10:30

This Sunday at DCC

This Sunday morning we are going to resume our journey through the Old Testament Book of Judges.

The Book covers a chaotic period in Israel's history between the years 1380 and 1050 B.C. Under Joshua's leadership, Israel had conquered and occupied the land of Canaan, but extensive areas hadn't yet passed into the hands of the individual tribes.

Over time the following pattern, known as the “Cycle of Sin”, emerged: Israel did evil - GOD delivered them into the hands of various oppressors - the people cried out to the LORD for help - a judge brought God’s deliverance. This Sunday morning the plan is to over the life of the first judge: Othniel and if there is time the 2nd - Ehud.

The passage we are looking at this week indicates that God does not defeat some enemies in order to teach and test His people. Is that right? If so is God just in doing that and how is that possible?

Hope to see you Sunday - 230 Provencher Blvd (Downstairs)
