Sunday Morning Preview - December 30, 2012

I trust everyone is enjoying the holiday season, resting from the daily grind and especially finding that rest that is only available to those who believe - the rest that is ours to enjoy if we are “in Christ”.

Is the gospel having an effect? Have you grown in your faith this year?
Has Christ’ strength enabled you to persevere in the face of suffering?
Please come prepared this Sunday morning to share your testimony of God’s faithfulness and to look back over the highlights of the teaching of God’s word at Dakota Community Church in 2012.

See you this Sunday morning.

Serving Those In Need

She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. - Luke 2:7

All of us should use the gospel to evaluate ourselves. How near or far are we from Christ? How are we doing in faith and love? Many become inflamed with dreamy devotion when they hear about how impoverished Christ was when he was born. They grow furious at the people of Bethlehem and criticize their blindness and ingratitude. They think that if they had been there, they would have served the Lord and his mother. They wouldn't have allowed them to be so miserable. But these people don't even notice their own neighbors who are nearby and need their help. They ignore them and leave them as they are. Who on earth doesn't have miserable, sick, blundering, or sinful people around them? Why don't they show their love to these people? Why don't they do for their neighbors what Christ did for them?

Don't deceive yourself by thinking you would have treated Christ well when you don't presently do anything for your neighbor. If you had been at Bethlehem, you would have paid just as little attention to him as everyone else did. You only want to serve him because you know who he is. Let's say that he were to come, lie in the manger, and let you know that he is the one you now know so much about. Of course you would want to do something to help. But before that, you wouldn't have done anything.

Similarly, if you could see your neighbors now as they will be in the future, and if they were lying in front of you, then you certainly would take care of them. But because you only see them for what they are now, you ignore them. You fail to recognize Christ in your neighbors.

Grace, Freedom, Laughter!

Sunday Morning Preview - December 23, 2012

We know that God loves us and yet we have repeatedly seen that His story, the Christian story, is not about us. Somehow God’s love for us means that our purpose is to glorify Him, to make much of Him, to enjoy - that is; to find all of our satisfaction - in Him.

Does that seem a little backward to anyone else?
I feel loved when I am the one being made much of, not when I am being told I am not central; and doesn’t all of this “glorify Me” talk leave God seeming petty, self-absorbed, and maybe even a little narcissistic?
How does the God-centeredness of God relate to his love for sinners like us?
How is God's passion for His glory an act of love?

This Sunday morning we will see that God's love for us keeps HIM at the center because it has to! - “HE created all things, and by HIS will they were created and have their being.”

I hope to see you for more along these lines this Sunday morning.

Sunday Morning Preview - December 16, 2012

The big day is fast approaching and with it, for some, a very great deal of pressure! The right gifts, the right party clothes, the right guests seated in the right places... on and on it goes; when we make the mistake of allowing good things to become ultimate things - the only possible outcome is disappointment.

Please join me this Sunday morning at DCC where we will celebrate with the lighting of the third advent candle, the “joy” candle, and we will take a look at the very substance of the Kingdom of God. A Kingdom, by the way; which scripture reveals includes joy in the Holy Spirit as a key characteristic of its citizens, not only during the holiday season, but everyday, all the time.

I hope to see you this Sunday morning for: “The Gift of Joy”!

Live By The Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.John 1:1

The following illustration is overly simplistic, but it makes the birth of the Son of God a little easier to understand. As a human son receives his body and his very being from his father, so the Son of God, born of the Father, receives his divine essence and nature from the eternal Father. But this or any other illustration can never adequately describe how the divine majesty can be given to another, as when the Father gives his entire divine essence to the Son. A human father can't give his entire being to his son. This is where the comparison breaks down.

However, as far as the divine being is concerned, all of God's divine essence and nature passes into the Son. Yet the Son, who remains in the divine being together with the Father, is one God together with the Father. Likewise, the Holy Spirit has the same divine nature and majesty as the Father and the Son.

You must simply believe this. No matter how clever, sharp, or intelligent a person may be, the human mind will never be able to fully comprehend it. If human wisdom were able to grasp this, then God wouldn't have needed to reveal it from heaven or announce it through Holy Scripture. So you should say, "Even though I can't completely comprehend it, I believe and confess that there is one eternal God, who is also three distinct persons. Holy Scripture is God's Word and says that this is the way it is. I will live by what it says."

Sunday Morning Preview - December 9, 2012

This week we celebrate with our annual favorite Children’s Christmas Concert and we will light the second candle - the peace candle - in our advent wreath. I will be preaching a sermon in keeping with the festivities entitled; “Peace On Earth”.

What did the angels come to announce all those years ago, and has it turned out to be a false message?Look at any evening news report; did God accomplish the announced objective?

Most who awaited Messiah did not believe that He had come in Jesus.
They awaited a conquering king; not a suffering servant. They awaited a political enforcer; not a spiritual healer. They awaited an earthly kingdom; not an eternal invisible one.

The original advent was missed by most people because of their incorrect carnal assumptions.
Could this also be true of us in our search for God’s peace?

Find out Sunday at 10:30.

Only God's Word Can Make Us Clean

You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.John 15:3

In this passage, Christ is offering us a remedy for the poison of arrogance, which is overestimating your own holiness. Jesus says this so none of us will think that our own suffering, apart from Christ, can attain forgiveness of sins or make us fruitful branches in the sight of God. Here's what usually happens: Someone does many good works and endures much suffering. That person becomes aware of producing fruit. In other words, they are aware of achieving something through preaching or some other method. Then that sweet poison begins to make the person think, "Oh, I have now done something that will make God notice me and be merciful to me." In this way, little wild branches begin growing alongside the true branches. These wild branches steal the sap and energy from the true branches so that they don't flourish. That is why the Gardener must be alert. He has to restrain such arrogance and presumption by constant application of the Word.

Christ is saying here, "You aren't clean because of what you do, what you suffer, or the fruit you produce. You wouldn't have done any of these things if you hadn't already been pruned and been made into good and true branches. Only God's Word can make you clean." It must be present at all times. The Father sends various kinds of suffering, danger, anxiety, need, and temptation to you so that you may hang on to God's Word tightly and so that it may work powerfully in you. In this way, he humbles you and teaches you that you can't make yourself clean. Your suffering doesn't make you clean before God. Yet it drives you to reach for God's Word and hold on to it more tightly and firmly. This is how God exercises your faith.

Sunday Morning Preview - December 2, 2012

Well another Church Year has flown by and we find ourselves once again approaching the first Sunday of Advent. Our thoughts turn toward Bethlehem and the coming of the long awaited Messiah; and of course here in 2012, Christmas is in the air. The children are excited, the malls are a zoo, and Christians everywhere struggle to find hope for the season and to keep Christ in the forefront.

This Sunday we will light the “hope” candle & I will share a message entitled; “Hope for the Season”.

Hope is hardwired into us; we cannot help ourselves – as the poet Alexander Pope says – “Hope springs eternal in the human breast”! All of our choices are fueled by the hope of a better future.
We begin or end relationships based on hope, we change careers or enter a new line of study - based on hope. Could it be that God is working against us in this endless endeavor? If so; why? Why would a loving God want to lead us to a point of hopelessness and despair?

Find out Sunday at 10:30.

Shoving Aside God's Grace

I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing! Galatians 2:21

Wanting to be justified by our own works through the law is so wrong that the apostle Paul calls this throwing away God's grace. It shows not only ingratitude—which is extremely bad in itself— but also contempt, because we should eagerly seek God's grace. Instead, we shove aside his grace, which we receive free of charge. This is a serious error. Consider Paul's argument: "If righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!" Paul confidently declares that either Christ's death was pointless, which is the highest blasphemy against God, or Christ's death was essential, and through the law we can have nothing but sin.

Some teachers categorize various kinds of righteousness using distinctions they have made up in their heads. If these teachers try to bring these ideas to theology, they should be kept far away from the Holy Scriptures. For these people say one kind is moral righteousness, another is righteousness of faith, and they describe others I don't even know about. Let civil government have its kind of righteousness, the philosophers have theirs, and each person have their own. But we must understand righteousness the way the Bible explains it. The apostle clearly says that there is no other righteousness than through faith in Jesus Christ. All other works, even those according to the holiest laws of God, do not offer righteousness. Not only that, but they are actually sins.

Our sins are so great and so far away from righteousness that it was necessary for the Son of God to die so that righteousness could be given to us. When discussing theology, don't call anything righteousness that is apart from faith in Christ.

Welcome - November 25, 2012

Welcome to Dakota Community Church

Grace, Freedom, Laughter

Good morning!

Today we are turning our attention toward the coming holiday season. Many people look forward to Christmas all year while others dread the season as a reminder of past pain or disappointment. As believers we need to be able to celebrate the birth of Christ, no matter what else; good or bad, the season may dredge up for us.

This morning’s message is about how the gospel reveals God’s plan for a Merry Christmas!

Enjoy the service and please follow along in the scriptures using the links below.

Scripture for today’s sermon:

Isaiah 9:6-7; Deuteronomy 28:64-65; 1 Peter 2:1-3; Ephesians 5:25; Luke 6:30; 1 Corinthians 6:12-13; Acts 17:24-28; Colossians 3:15-16; Colossians 3:23; Hebrews 10:23-25

Sunday Morning Preview - Nov. 25, 2012

Please join me this Sunday morning at DCC as we kick off the Christmas season with what I am praying will be a life changing time in the Word of God that will lead to the best Christmas ever for many of us.

This time of year stirs a deep longing for something more, something just beyond our reach, something we once knew... or... did we?
Did we really experience those dream like Christmases of childhood memory or are they merely nostalgic bits and pieces of television specials, and seasonal songs that our minds have assembled to give us hope and keep us sane?

Will 2012 be the year that you finally realize it? The family gathering, the decorations, the food, the gifts; will they all combine - this time - to satisfy that craving?

How will you find ultimate satisfaction this Christmas?

The Only Path to Life

Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you."John 6:53

No matter what anyone says, this passage is clear. If Jesus had phrased this in the affirmative, "Whoever eats my flesh has life," then somebody could have challenged it by saying, "Those who don't eat it will also be saved." Some scoundrels also say, "Your teaching is correct, but ours is also correct. The Lord didn't mean to exclude other ways." They create many ways to receive eternal life, including praying to the saints, worshiping the Virgin Mary, or living in a monastery. But none of these ways can achieve eternal life. Christ excludes all other ways. They are all unacceptable.

Take a look at this from another angle. If I were to say, "Wittenberg beer quenches thirst. Annaberg beer also quenches thirst," then I don't exclude other beers. But it would be very different if I were to say, "If you don't drink Wittenberg beer, no other beer will quench your thirst." In the same way, Christ doesn't speak in the affirmative here. He excludes everything else when he says, "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you." If we despise his flesh, nothing else will prove helpful. I may call on Saint Mary or Saint Peter, but they cannot help me. It's out of the question. In a word, all other ways are rejected.

Life, grace, and salvation come to us by faith alone and not by good works. They become ours by believing and by eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ.

Sunday Morning November 18th At Dakota

This Sunday morning we will wrap up our look at the ministry gift/office of “Prophet” and how it functions by seeking the answers to the following questions:

  • I have been a Christian for a long time but have not seen any of these gifts functioning, wouldn’t this indicate that these things have passed away?
  • Should prophesy bring hope and encouragement and confirm something that is already in your heart. What about the prophesy that doesn't bring hope and encouragement?
  • Should every prophetic word be brought before the elders and if so why?
  • When the Spirit speaks to us, is that always prophesy?  Is this just semantics?
  • Is the Spirit of God equal to the Spirit of Prophesy (or not)?
  • Is there any chance I will be put on the spot and asked to prophesy or to be prophesied over?
  • How is error to be recognized and properly addressed.
  • My experience is that cults use the (false) prophetic to manipulate and control members; how is that safe guarded against?
I hope to see you all Sunday morning!

Sunday Morning Preview - Nov. 11, 2012

We will continue this Sunday morning with our walk through the book of Ephesians, seeking to better understand the ministry gift/office of “Prophet” and how it functions.

After last weeks panel discussion I have had a number of questions and comments that I think we should address in the congregational setting. Some of them include:

Is the idea of “making mistakes” in learning the prophetic really biblical?
If there are mistakes made should the whole process be called “prophetic” or is there some other way of describing it?
Is there any chance I will be put on the spot and asked to "prophesy" or to be "prophesied over"?
How is error to be recognized and properly addressed.
My experience is that cults use the (false) prophetic to manipulate and control members; how is that safe guarded against?

I hope to see you all Sunday morning!

Prayer

Their prayer came up to his holy dwelling place, even unto heaven.

2 Chronicles 30:27

Prayer is the never-failing resort of the Christian in any case, in every plight. When you cannot use your sword you may take to the weapon of all-prayer. Your powder may be damp, your bow-string may be relaxed, but the weapon of all-prayer need never be out of order. Leviathan laughs at the javelin, but he trembles at prayer. Sword and spear need furbishing, but prayer never rusts, and when we think it most blunt it cuts the best. Prayer is an open door which none can shut. Devils may surround you on all sides, but the way upward is always open, and as long as that road is unobstructed, you will not fall into the enemy's hand. We can never be taken by blockade, escalade, mine, or storm, so long as heavenly succours can come down to us by Jacob's ladder to relieve us in the time of our necessities. Prayer is never out of season: in summer and in winter its merchandise is precious. Prayer gains audience with heaven in the dead of night, in the midst of business, in the heat of noonday, in the shades of evening. In every condition, whether of poverty, or sickness, or obscurity, or slander, or doubt, your covenant God will welcome your prayer and answer it from his holy place. Nor is prayer ever futile. True prayer is evermore true power. You may not always get what you ask, but you shall always have your real wants supplied. When God does not answer his children according to the letter, he does so according to the spirit. If thou askest for coarse meal, wilt thou be angered because he gives thee the finest flour? If thou seekest bodily health, shouldst thou complain if instead thereof he makes thy sickness turn to the healing of spiritual maladies? Is it not better to have the cross sanctified than removed? This evening, my soul, forget not to offer thy petition and request, for the Lord is ready to grant thee thy desires.

Sunday November 4, 2012 at DCC

This Sunday morning we will continue our walk through the book of Ephesians, seeking to better understand the ministry gift/office of “Prophet” and how it functions.

The plan is to look at the various passages in the New Testament that describe this gift in operation, to note how the people respond to it and to ask some hard questions about how all of this should look in a modern day congregation.

Why is there so much controversy surrounding the issue of Prophets and the prophetic ministry in the church today?
Can we disagree on some of these things and still be unified as a body?
At what point does doctrinal error result in ship-wrecked faith?
What is to be done with false prophets and in the case of  incorrect/false prophesies?
Realizing that experience does not trump Bible - what is your experience?
Is there a prophet in the house and if so how is that decided and validated?

Sunday Morning Preview for October 28, 2012

This Sunday morning we will continue our walk through the book of Ephesians, delving further into Paul’s explanation of how this message of grace actually looks as it is lived out by believers in relationship with each other in the Church. If all of this seems eerily familiar -it’s not because halloween is just a few days away -  it is because I failed to cover the planned material last Sunday and so the preview remains the same!

We have seen clearly that it is God who is the author of the diverse spiritual gifts given to the Body of Christ and that claims that the gifts no longer function are easily debunked scripturally. Now we are beginning to work our way through the gifts beginning with a study of the “five fold ministry gifts” seen in Ephesians 4:11

Are there still people occupying apostolic ministries today? If so what would be the identifying characteristics of such ministers/ministries? How would they, or would they not, differ from the original twelve? What about prophets and the prophetic gifts? Still operating or passed away? How serious is it to say, “Thus says the LORD” if He has not spoken?

Join me Sunday morning as we search for answers to these and many more questions in a sermon I have entitled: “Grace at Work 8 - Understanding Gifts and Service” This time I mean it!

PCC/DCC Joint Service this Sunday

The air is cool and crisp, the leaves have turned, the days are becoming noticeably shorter, and shelves everywhere are full of tomatoes, pumpkins, and jars of pickled everything! The summer of 2012 is behind us, and the wonder of fall in Manitoba explodes at every turn in all it’s panoramic glory... our thoughts can’t help but turn once again to the faithfulness of our God.

For believers thanksgiving is an every day occurrence, not merely a once a year holiday; nevertheless the Holiday is a special time of reflection with family and friends in the Body of Christ. What better time for another PCC/DCC unity service celebrating thanksgiving and sharing communion one with another?

Please join us on Sunday October 7th (Upstairs) at 10:30 AM for what promises to be another great time of rejoicing in the Lord and building friendships within the Body.

And don't forget your thanksgiving toques, mittens and snow shovels! (*Sigh*)

Welcome to Dakota Community Church

Grace, Freedom, Laughter

Good morning!

Today we are continuing or journey through the Book of Ephesians beginning with a look at the ministry gifts and jumping off from there to examine the rest of the gifts of the Spirit mentioned in other places in the New Testament.

Are these gifts still functioning or did they cease to be part of God’s plan for the church with the advent of the Bible?

Enjoy the service and please follow along in the scriptures using the links below.
